Kingsley School celebrates success at UKMT Mathematics Challenge

Kingsley school are celebrating fantastic results in a national mathematics competition. The Senior Mathematics Challenge is aimed at all 16-19 year-olds studying mathematics. The challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions, in exam conditions within 90 minutes.

The top 10% of entered students nationally receive a gold certificate, the next 20% receive silver and the next 30% receive bronze.

Top performing students are then invited to take part in the follow-on round, the Senior Kangaroo. Around 1000 top scorers in the Senior Challenge are invited to take part in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 and around 2000 are invited to take part in the Senior Kangaroo.

This year Kingsley School Bideford achieved three Gold certificates, one silver certificate and nine bronze. Two students qualified for the next round in the senior Kangaroo.

One student, Chris, answered 23 out of 25 correctly and scored well over the threshold to qualify for the British Olympiad.

Kingsley School Bideford also came 5th in the Senior Team Maths Challenge; a competition testing mathematical, communication and teamwork skills. Students compete against teams from other schools and colleges from their region.

Kingsley run Maths and Further Maths A-Level, and are following the IGCSE course. Last year Leon, a further mathematician, sat his Maths A-Level in one year and scored 595/600 including 4 perfect 100% papers!

In 2017 we will be introducing Functional Maths alongside A Level courses for those who are wanting to continue to improve their maths after year 11 but not at A Level rigour.
