In our approach to the school curriculum, Kingsley’s philosophy is based on two principles.
Academically, we offer our high fliers a broad range of GCSE and A-level subjects, and every encouragement and support to achieve outstanding results – which they do, year after year.
At the same time, we are just as committed to bringing the very best out of our less academically gifted pupils and are just as happy, and proud, to share their celebrations when they achieve grades beyond their dreams when they arrived at Kingsley – which they do, year after year.
This same philosophy runs through Kingsley’s approach to Sport, to Drama, to Art, to every activity on the school curriculum, in the classroom and beyond.
Excellence is encouraged and celebrated: but, in the spirit of the Olympic Games motto, at Kingsley, it’s the taking part that really matters.
Year after year, Kingsley’s GCSE & A-Level students achieve remarkable results, the product of years of consistent, involving and challenging study under the encouraging, supportive and often inspiring guidance of our specialist teaching staff.
The GCSE curriculum consists of a combination of core subjects…English Language & Literature, Maths, Sciences, Modern Languages…and options such as Drama, Geography, History, Art, PE, ICT, Food Technology and Music.
Our 6th Form students continue their academic studies with a similarly broad range of AS and A-level subject and vocational options.
Advice and support in choosing appropriate subjects for specific career ambitions and university entrance is available on a continuing basis.
Assessment and Reporting
From Years 7 to 11 parents receive an annual Written Report and Progress Checks each half term, which show the students’ progress against an entry profile based on national and internal assessments.
Please see documents below for further information.
If any Kingsley student has a talent – however modest or even unsuspected – for music, for art, for drama…and we’ve yet to meet one who doesn’t…our creative staff will find a way to reveal and unleash it. Every year, our Drama Department stages an original and impressive major school production: the most recent was a highly entertaining and lively production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
Every year, local and regional galleries display stunning pieces created in our Art Department.
Every year, our Music Department presents show after entertaining show, ranging from intimate cabaret to all-singing, all-dancing, large cast musicals.
To paraphrase a popular television show, Kingsley really does have talent.
When it comes to sport, Kingsley starts with something of an advantage.
Located as we are in the heart of glorious North Devon, we have some of the UK’s most stunning surf beaches on our doorstep, while the River Torridge winds its way through Bideford.
No wonder our surfers and windsurfers do so well in local, regional and national competitions.
In sports as varied as gymnastics, netball, judo and biathlon, Kingsley students regularly win national titles.
But we are just as proud of the fact that every pupil, of every age, size and ability, is encouraged to take part in – and represent the school at – whatever sport takes their fancy.
Sport really is for everyone at Kingsley.
When the regular teaching classes come to end, the Kingsley day is far from over, because that’s when more than 60 extra-curricular clubs and activities offer our students a stimulating, challenging, thoroughly enjoyable final hour.
In the course of a week, they can, for example, improve their sporting prowess on the playing field or in the gym, immerse themselves in a drama or music session, prepare for the challenge of a Duke of Edinburgh Award, revise an academic subject, learn a new judo throw or an ancient painting technique.
The choice is theirs, the choice changes term by term, the choice is virtually endless.
