Kingsley School Bideford Sixth Form students who are studying English Literature or Biology had a great experience over the weekend. They had the opportunity to hear the eminent geneticist Lord Robert Winston, speaking at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington, Devon.

Lord Winston’s talk was entitled, ‘Modifying Humans; Making Super-Humans?’, and was incredible wide-ranging and thought-provoking. He addressed issues such as historic eugenics’ programmes, enforced sterilisation, medical ethics and the importance of considering the needs of both the individual and the needs of society.

In the course of his speech, Lord Winston also emphasised the importance of encouraging more girls to study science, and the need for more science to be taught in primary schools. Students agreed that it was a very interesting talk which will support their Biological study of genetics and their consideration of ‘Science and Society’ as part of their English Literature course.

Following the talk tea and cake were served whilst Lord Winston signed books and posed for photographs.
